After we’ve had babies, it is harder to lose weight and to keep it off due to the virtual smorgasbord of snacks we have at our disposal. Why does this matter? If you were able to carry a baby at this weight before, isn’t that a sign that you can do it again? The truth is that while you very well may be able to carry a completely healthy baby at the weight you are now, it is a risk that we aren’t willing to take, for your health and for the health of the baby.
Why Being Overweight During Pregnancy Can Be Harmful
Being overweight or obese during pregnancy can raise your risk for particular problems throughout those nine months. Gaining more weight than is recommended can cause the same issues.
Some of the more prevalent issues for women who are overweight and become pregnant include:
- Gestational Diabetes: This is diabetes that starts during pregnancy. Those who have gestational diabetes have a higher lifetime risk for remaining obese or developing Type 2 diabetes. Or, gestational diabetes can cause low blood sugar in the infant. Finally, babies who grow inside women with gestational diabetes tend to be larger, which makes delivery more painful.
- Gestational Hypertension: This is high blood pressure during the pregnancy. If your blood pressure isn’t controlled during pregnancy, you may develop preeclampsia.
- C-Sections: Women who are overweight are more likely to require a C-section when it comes time to deliver the baby.

What About Gaining Weight During Surrogacy?
Of course, you are likely to gain weight while you are pregnant – you are carrying another life. Not only because you want to stay healthy for the baby, but because you will want to stay healthy for yourself.
According to Women’s Health, you should gain the following while you are pregnant:
- Underweight (BMI of less than 18.5), you should gain 28 to 40 pounds
- Normal weight (BMI of 18.5 to 24.9), you should gain 25 to 35 pounds
- Overweight (BMI of 25 to 29.9), you should gain 15 to 25 pounds
- Obesity (BMI of 30 or greater), you should gain no more than 11 to 20 pounds
